Jamaica's History

Jamaica was first inhabited by Arawaks and tainos who originated form South America. Christopher Columbus discovered or came to the Island in 1494 who claimed Jamaica for Spain and was later overthrown by the British. Columbus landed in Dry Harbour now Called Discovery Bay in St. Anns which he fled because of the numerous pirate raids. The English Took over and formed population of mostly blacks due to active slavery and slave trade. After the abolition of the slave trade, the British started to import Indian and Chinese workers to help with the production of sugar which was one of the world's leading sugar producer. The British implemented laws to abolish slavery and improve the slaves way of life.

Jamaican began to slowly gain independence in 1958, but attained full independence in August 6, 1962. Here we are today still going..............
